This November our sports development officers Jessica O’Keeffe & Elizabeth Mc Nicholas as part of our Clare Action Group on rowing had a great trip to Saint Nazaire, France. It was for our 2nd transnational meeting as part of the Erasmus+ program – the ROSE project (Rowing as Outdoor Sports Education) with Comité Régional Olympique et Sportif (CROS) des Pays de la Loire.
The first in-person meeting led by Jessica O’Keeffe took place in Ennis in August 2021 and was a huge success. Participants from Portugal and France got to try out Curragh rowing thanks to Clarecastle Curragh Club. They then got to experience Rowing Ireland’s Get Going Get Rowing program on the River Shannon from Castleconnel Boat Club. The international collaboration of coaches worked together which led to valuable outcomes such as educational files.

In Saint Nazaire, France, the Clare Action Group got to learn how CROS des Pays de la Loire run their schools’ rowing programmes called RAME en 5eme. There was a tour of local rowing clubs both at a lake and at the ocean. Participants had a cold but refreshing coastal row on the Atlantic. The coaches collaborated and created more educational lesson plans to help coaches use rowing as an educational tool for Health, Inclusion, and Environment.

What is the ROSE project?
e Sports Partnership are delighted to be part of the ROSE: Rowing an Outdoor Sport for Education. This international collaboration project aims to promote and educate young people through the practices of rowing. The international steering group consists of: Comité Régional Olympique et Sportif des Pays de la Loire (France), Ligue d’aviron des Pays de la Loire(France) Clare Local Sports Partnership (Ireland), C.I.M. Alto Minho (Portugal) and We Atlantic. It covers three core areas – health, education, and inclusion. It will strengthen links between schools and rowing clubs. Along with our partners, we are looking to increase awareness of rowing, create opportunities for participants to try rowing, and enhance rowing already in existence within County Clare.
