The Active School Flag (ASF) is a Department of Education initiative, supported by Healthy Ireland, designed to promote a more physically active and health-aware school culture. ASF encourages schools to integrate physical activity into daily routines and helps them work towards achieving a recognised, whole-school award.

Active School Flag is non-competitive and designed to suit every school’s unique context—big or small, urban or rural.

Once awarded, the Active School Flag is valid for three years.

What’s more is even if your school isn’t actively pursuing the ASF, the ASF website offers a wide range of free resources and initiatives that are open to all schools. These include:

  • PE lesson ideas and planning templates

  • Classroom-based movement breaks

  • Outdoor and cross-curricular activity suggestions

  • Active School Week toolkits

  • Videos, posters, and planning supports

These can be used year-round, regardless of weather or space, and are suitable for every class level and ability!

By taking part in ASF—or simply making use of their free materials—your school is taking a powerful steps towards a more active, healthier and happier school environment for all!
