12 weeks.
3 training locations.
42 determined participants.
1 unforgettable challenge.

The Banner Mile wasn’t just about swimming a mile—it was about setting a goal, showing up, and proving that you’re capable of more than you ever imagined.

Training Begins

Over the course of three months, swimmers trained weekly across three different venues, Lahinch Leisure Centre, Shannon Leisure and Active Ennis Leisure Centre.

Participants were guided by experienced coaches and supported by a community that grew stronger with every session. From chilly January mornings to the brighter days of spring, participants built endurance, confidence, and connection.

One participant summed it up perfectly:

Excellent program. Joe an excellent teacher and motivator. Would never have dreamed of swimming a mile a year ago.

Whether people joined as beginners or experienced swimmers, everyone had a mountain to climb—and they climbed it together.

The journey wasn’t always easy, but it was always worth it. As one swimmer shared:

Great motivation for the dark winter Jan/Feb weeks.

And for many, it went far beyond swimming. It was about confidence, strength, and pushing boundaries. As one participant explained:

I can not praise this programme enough… We were pushed out of our comfort zone, and for women of a certain age, that is what gave us the sense of empowerment, after each and every training session.

The Main Event

When event day arrived, the energy was electric. Nerves and excitement filled the air as each swimmer stepped up to the challenge: 64 lengths of the pool—one full mile.

The fastest time clocked in at an incredible 34 minutes and 42 seconds, but this wasn’t just about racing the clock. Every participant brought their own reason and their own personal victory.

A huge well done to all our participants who took the plunge and smashed The Banner Mile Challenge!

A big thank you also to the amazing coaches and excellent Leisure Centres, whom without, this programme would not have been such a success!

I really enjoyed the program… great swimming coaches, lovely camaraderie between the swimmers. I am very proud of myself finishing the Banner mile. Thank you for organising this and all your hard work.
